Allandale Station is seeking an enthusiastic, inspired individual to fill the role of Food Service Manager. This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate be a member of the management team, ensuring the residents enjoy a healthy, enjoyable diet and an unequalled dining experience.
The successful candidate’s areas of responsibility will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Overseeing and monitoring daily meal service delivery, ensuring an exception dining experience for all residents, resident family members, and guests of the retirement community;
- Participating in and monitoring food preparation for daily meal service in accordance to planned menus ensuring individual dietary needs are met while adhering to quality and food safety standards; this role will also include some cooking shifts;
- Creating and overseeing the creation of baked goods from scratch, utilizing an understanding of ingredients and food preparation;
- Providing leadership and direction to all dining and food service staff, including scheduling and assigning work;
- Developing and maintaining effective relationships with residents and their families in order to determine individual needs, resolve issues or concerns, and evaluate resident satisfaction;
- Forecasting, monitoring, and approving expenditures from the budget allocated to dining and food services, strictly observing and adhering to the variable reporting budget and procedures;
- Developing and implementing inventory control systems to maximize savings and minimize waste;
- Communicating with suppliers to obtain agreement on delivery schedules;
- Preparing special event menu plans in liaison with the marketing and recreation teams. Executing special event menus;
- Participating, where requested, as a working member of the resident food committee;
- Ensuring all dining and food service staff are familiar with food handling, storage, and infection control measures at the beginning of orientation and ongoing thereafter;
- Interpreting and implementing applicable policies and procedures – acts as an ambassador for best practices to staff;
- Organizing the cleaning schedule and regular equipment checks in order to maintain Public Health Standards; ensuring serveries and all work areas are clean and uncluttered;
- Ensuring all applicable staff attend safe food handling courses with Public Health;
- Organizing and directing staff orientation and in-service training programs;
- Liaising with Public Health, RHRA, and all other industry regulators, as required;
- Supervisory responsibilities include recruiting, orientation, and ongoing training; scheduling, assigning, and monitoring work; providing guidance and direction and evaluating performance; ensuring staff maintain a safe and sanitary working environment; resolving employee conflicts, and recommending/participating in disciplinary and/or termination actions, as required;
- Other related duties, as assigned.
The key qualifications for this position will include, but are not limited to:
- The ideal candidate will have at least two (2) years of supervisory experience in a volume food preparation environment in the healthcare or in the hospitality industry;
- Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma in food and beverage management from a recognized institution; current qualification as a chef and a food service supervisors’ certification is considered an asset;
- Ability to read, write, and accurately follow written and verbal instructions;
- Must have Smart Serve and required food safety/sanitation certifications;
- Must be knowledgeable of the Ontario Food Premises Regulations and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating, as well all other pertinent legislation and regulations including the Retirement Homes Act, 2010 and its regulations;
- Knowledge of special and therapeutic diets;
- Being physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for long periods of time;
- The ability to work accurately, quickly, and safely; able to understand and follow guidelines, regulations, policies, and procedures;
- You are a cooperative team leader who is able to communicate to our senior residents, their families, colleagues, and managers in a friendly and professional manner;
- Creative abilities for menu planning, as well as food preparation and presentation;
- Must be able to understand and effectively manage inventory control and meet the food budget on a per resident day basis;
- Effective time management skills to manage the schedule for meal service;
- Demonstrated, hands-on leadership skills to successfully oversee all aspects the dining and food services team to deliver a high-end, enjoyable dining experience to our residents, their families, and guests. To accomplish this, your knowledge will include, but is not limited to, proper food storage and preparation techniques, menu planning, budgeting, inventory management, instituting ongoing quality improvements, meal service, and exceptional customer service practices;
- A criminal records/vulnerable sector screen, TB screening using a two-step Mantoux tuberculin test, and satisfactory professional references.
